Orthopedic Surgery in The Bahamas
Total Joint Replacement
During total joint replacement surgery, all or part of an arthritic or damaged joint, such as a hip, knee or shoulder joints, are removed and replaced with a plastic or metal prosthesis. The prosthesis enables the artificial joint to move just like a normal, healthy joint. Joint replacement surgery restores full joint function and dramatically reduces pain in 90 to 95% of patients.
Total Hip Replacement (Arthroplasty)
A total hip replacement is a critical surgery for people with hip pain caused by degenerative joint disease or rheumatoid arthritis. This surgery restores joint motion and regenerates muscle and ligament function. During a hip replacement surgery, the top of the femoral bone (thigh bone) is removed and a new round piece is inserted at least 4 inches into the bone. The cup on the pelvic bone is scraped and a new cup is fastened and secured into the hip bone. Hospital stay is required.
Total Knee Replacement (Arthroplasty)
Total knee replacement surgery is often recommended to replace the worn surfaces of the knee joint. During surgery, the bottom of the femoral bone (thigh bone) is removed and a prosthesis is inserted. The top of the tibia (lower leg bone) is also removed and a prosthesis is attached.
Knee arthroscopy utilizes an arthroscope, which is inserted into the knee joint through two small incisions. The purpose of the scope is to allow the surgeon to see inside the joint without making a large incision. The surgery is used for diagnosis, to remove loose tissue or ligaments or shave the knee cap. This is an outpatient surgery.
Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery
Carpal Tunnel is a painful condition that results from the median nerve being trapped in the wrist. Numbness, tingling of the fingers and weakness of the thumb muscles are common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel release surgery releases the band that has tightened around the median nerve, restoring pain-free function. This is an outpatient surgery.
